STUBBE CHOCOLATES

A remarkable family business story dating back to 1845 in northern Germany represents six generations of chocolate making. Today, father-and-son chocolatiers Heinrich and Daniel Stubbe carry on the traditions with chocolate houses dedicated to Old World European recipes, meticulous care, and only the finest ingredients. Everything is made by hand on-site, including a dazzling array of truffles (with some unusual boozy flavours such as kir royale and gewurztraminer), chocolates (caramel and sea salt), traditional European cakes (Viennese Sachertorte, Frankfurt Crown), and 30-plus kinds of chocolate bars, including region-specific cocoa bean varieties. Gossip Girl
***
The season 4 opener keeps up the momentum of May's cliffhanger and - MAGNIFIQUE! - places some of the drama in Paris. There, Serena (Blake Lively) and a heartbroken Blair (Leighton Meester) shop, hobnob with royalty and bond, unaware that Chuck (Ed Westwick) has been gunned down. Back in NYC, Dan (Penn Badgley) deals with a delightfully devious Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) and her baby news. All the story lines are freshened up by perfectly placed wit. BETTER WITH YOU (ABC)

JoAnna Garcia and Jennifer Finnigan are sisters, each in a relationship, each unsure how to handle their wisecracking parents. This sitcom can't be dinged for its acting, which is smooth across the board, but it feels inorganic, like something cloned from the lab that houses the sitcom genome. It's a temperature-controlled How I Met Your Mother. **

ARGENTINE REDS

Tupungato Passo Doble (LCBO 620880, $13.95) is a unique and very successful experiment from Masi, the Italian producer best known for Amarone and Campofiorin. The company bought land in Tupungato, near Mendoza, in 1996 and is now producing Passo Doble using the ripasso double-fermentation method that give...s Campofiorin its special richness. A blend of Malbec and Corvina, it bursts with ripe, juicy flavours of mulberry, blackberry and cassis overlaid with resinous spice. This is a great wine for the price and I'd suggest buying an extra bottle to keep for Christmastime.

BEER MATCHING

Barbeque and beer go together like ham and eggs-it's one of those classic combinations that just can't miss. But not all beer is created equal and there are some brews that will do more to show off your mastery at the grill. When it comes to choosing beer for your next barbeque, Globe and Mail wine expert Beppi Crosariol recommends reaching for a pilsner. "It's refreshing and versatile so it will suit whatever you've got on the grill," he says. "I'm a fan of the Czech Pilsner Urquell (LCBO 388900, 6 pk, $13.50), but also look for local pilsner-style microbrews."

Weezer
Hurley
***
When Weezer chose a pic of Lost's Jorge Garcia as its eighth CD's cover, it was clear their zaniness was still intact. But the alt-rockers again ably mine darker emotions too, like when singer Rivers Cuomo cries, "Make the hurt go away" on "Run Away." (Epitaph)

Mavis Staples

You Are Not Alone
****
Gospel/R&B
You know something serious is up when Mavis Staples is playing Lollapalooza. The 71-year-old R&B-gospel great was joined by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy during her performance at the Chicago music festival last month, but the unlikely pair had already teamed up to make this inspired album of spirituals and soul-sanctified covers. With Tweedy keeping it real authentic behind the boards, Staples takes it to church on traditionals, two songs from dad Pop Staples and others by John Fogerty and Randy Newman. Tweedy also contributes two originals, including the title track, on which Staples provides the comfort of a higher power.

"I like clothes, you know. I dig fabrics. One of my favorite clothing patterns is camouflage. Because when you’re in the woods it makes you blend in. But when you’re not it does just the opposite. It’s like, ‘Hey, there’s an asshole.’ But when you’re in the woods you’re like, ‘Is there an asshole out here?’ They look like trees."

A Single Man
Colin Firth earned an Oscar nod for his devastating portrayal of a gay professor who contemplates suicide after teh death of his lover in 1962. While first-time filmmaker Tom Ford relies too heavily on art direction-shooting the drama with a glossiness that sometimes distracts from the emotional story-the a...cting soars. Power Pills!

Dermatologists are buzzing about the megadose of antioxidants in a new line of supplements called Immuno-Viva Core. Studies have shown that taking either the soft gels or the cold-pressed oil for 60 days can prevent and repair cell damage while boosting immunity, and no wonder: A teaspoon of the Liquid Cor...e oil contains several pounds of black raspberries and black cumin seeds (the former are rich in antioxidants, the latter in omega-6 fatty acids).

Garnier Fructis Style XXL Volume Thickening Mousse

To use on roots!

‎"Natural" and "subtle" are just about the last two words associated with volumizing mascaras-products that usually aim to make your lashes look as fake as possible. But Lancome Definicils Precious Cells Amplifying Mascara just might offer a new paradigm, employing creamy waxes that make lashes look longer and thicker, but in a tasteful, softer way. "This isn't a drag-queen situation," says makeup artist Pati Dubroff, who tested it. "It offers a decent amount of volume and is very natural-looking-and one coat was enough for a smooth, silky finish.

Best of Summer 2010

Fantastic ways to fill your summer days!

Mark yourself!
New Moon Tattoo
Summer's temperatures inspire the doffing of layers of clothes, so what better time to get inked? Take your design ideas to the artists at New Moon, and they'll work to customize a tattoo for you. Tip: Don't be that guy (or girl) who picks a design straight off the wall of the tattoo place-real tattoo aficionados will laugh at you.

Cloud Gazing
Anywhere
When was the last time you cloudgazed? No equipment required other than a grassy spot to stretch out, a half decent pair of eyes, and the imagination to see dragons, sailboats - you name it - in those shifting clouds. Don't worry if you drift off to sleep: alertness is overrated anyway.

Soak in Style

Le Nordik
When the frenetic pace of enjoyment threatens to overwhelm, head for the hills -- and a spa day in the Gatineaus. Relax in outdoor pools, enjoy a hot stone massage ($145), and indulge in tasty bites from their redesigned menu, such as brie stuffed with truffles ($9) and grilled bison sausage ($8) Admission to baths, $44.

Skinny Italian

(Hyperion) by New Jersey's Teresa Guidice with Heather MacLean
Writing Style: Charming and authentic, with references to her "ma" and her "bubbies."
Surprisingly good advice: Avoid dried basil. "You might as well crumble dead leaves...over your food."
Plot twist: Her recipe for pasta puttanesca (Italian for "...whore's pasta") is named after Danielle.
Moral: "The Olive garden does not serve Italian food. They serve American-Italian food; and there's a big, big difference-a difference you will see in your big, big butt..."

Make a point of keeping in touch with people I've met on my travels. That way you have friends (and a place to stay;)) all over the world!

Accept that my cat hates me. Sprinkles (R.I.P.) acted like he hated the affection that I gave him, but deep down I know that he loved it!

peach and raspberry smoothie

This classic combination relies on the sweetness of a ripe peach to work well-but be sure the peach is not overripe, or it will have an unpleasant taste.

And considering they come from a wide variety of databases, I thought I would start a blog to let everyone in on my ideas! I hope to keep everyone entertained!
